Top Ethereum Restaking Protocol Quits Business as Yields Collapse and Risks Mount

Ethereum's leading liquid restaking protocol has abandoned its core business to build a crypto neobank instead, marking the end of the restaking gold rush as yields dried up and smart-contract vulnerabilities became too costly to ignore.

The restaking boom that defined much of Ethereum's 2025 narrative has come to an abrupt end. The sector's top liquid restaking protocol has pivoted away from its original business model entirely, choosing instead to develop a crypto-focused neobank as yields evaporated and the risk-reward calculus turned decisively negative.

Restaking allowed users to stake the same Ether multiple times across different protocols, amplifying potential returns but also compounding smart-contract risk. For months, protocols competed to offer the highest yields, attracting billions in total value locked. But as more capital flooded in, returns per user shrank proportionally, and the boom turned into a race to the bottom.

The unnamed protocol's decision to exit reflects a broader reckoning across the restaking sector. What began as a lucrative opportunity for early participants has become barely profitable for even the largest platforms. The protocol in question, which once managed billions in restaked assets, concluded that the thin margins no longer justified the operational and security overhead required to run a restaking service safely.

Smart-contract exploits have also played a decisive role in the sector's decline. Several high-profile hacks targeted restaking protocols in recent months, exposing users to cascading losses when a single vulnerability could drain funds staked across multiple layers. The complexity of restaking architectures made auditing prohibitively expensive, and insurance products failed to keep pace with the evolving risk landscape.

The pivot to a neobank model signals a search for more sustainable revenue streams. By offering custody, lending, and payment services, the protocol hopes to monetize its existing user base without the constant pressure to compete on yield. It also reduces exposure to the technical risks that plagued restaking, though it introduces new regulatory challenges in the banking domain.

For ordinary investors, the lesson is clear: ultra-high yields in DeFi rarely persist once they attract serious capital. Those still holding positions in restaking protocols should reassess whether the diminished returns justify the layered smart-contract risk. The gold rush is over, and the survivors are those who recognized when to walk away and build something new.
