Singapore Exchange Opens Bitcoin and Ether Perpetual Futures to U.S. Institutions

The Singapore Exchange has granted U.S. institutions access to its bitcoin and ether perpetual futures contracts, bridging American trading desks with Asian crypto liquidity for the first time.

The Singapore Exchange (SGX) announced on Thursday that U.S. institutional investors can now trade its bitcoin and ether perpetual futures contracts, marking a significant milestone in cross-continental crypto market integration. The move connects American trading desks directly to one of Asia's deepest pools of cryptocurrency liquidity, potentially reshaping how institutions execute large crypto trades across time zones.

Perpetual futures, which differ from traditional futures by having no expiration date, have become the dominant trading instrument in cryptocurrency markets, accounting for more than 70% of daily crypto derivatives volume globally. SGX's contracts offer institutional-grade infrastructure with robust clearing mechanisms and regulatory oversight under the Monetary Authority of Singapore, features that appeal to compliance-conscious U.S. firms.

The development comes as U.S. institutions have increasingly sought access to offshore crypto derivatives markets that offer deeper liquidity and 24/7 trading capabilities beyond what domestic venues currently provide. While U.S.-regulated crypto futures trade on the CME Group, perpetual contracts — which use funding rates instead of settlement dates to track spot prices — have remained largely the domain of offshore exchanges.

SGX's entry into the U.S. institutional market follows years of infrastructure development and regulatory coordination. The exchange has positioned itself as a bridge between traditional finance and crypto markets, leveraging Singapore's progressive regulatory framework that balances innovation with investor protection. U.S. institutions accessing the platform will still need to comply with domestic regulations, including CFTC registration requirements for trading foreign derivatives.

The timing of the announcement coincides with renewed institutional interest in crypto exposure following bitcoin's recent climb above $78,000. Trading desks at banks and hedge funds have been seeking venues that can handle large order flow without significant price impact, a challenge that has plagued thinner U.S. markets during periods of high volatility.

Market analysts suggest the SGX access could increase arbitrage opportunities between U.S. and Asian markets, potentially tightening price spreads across regions. It also provides U.S. institutions with direct exposure to Asian trading hours, when crypto markets often see significant price movements that American desks previously could only react to after the fact.

The move represents a competitive challenge to U.S. exchanges pushing for expanded crypto derivatives offerings. While regulatory clarity in the U.S. has improved with recent legislation, offshore venues like SGX continue to offer products and trading flexibility that domestic platforms cannot yet match. How U.S. regulators respond to increased institutional participation on foreign crypto platforms may shape the next phase of market development.
