Hex Founder Richard Heart Arrested in Istanbul as Police Seize $4 Million Cash and 64 Luxury Watches

Turkish authorities arrested cryptocurrency founder Richard Heart during a raid on his Istanbul residence, confiscating millions in cash and a collection of high-end timepieces, according to local media reports.

Richard Heart, the controversial founder of the Hex cryptocurrency project, was arrested by Turkish police in Istanbul on Thursday, according to multiple Turkish media outlets. The arrest came during a raid on Heart's residence in the Turkish metropolis, where authorities reportedly seized $4 million in cash along with 64 luxury watches.

The scale of the seizure suggests authorities suspected significant financial irregularities. Turkish law enforcement has become increasingly active in pursuing cryptocurrency-related cases, particularly those involving large cash holdings that may indicate money laundering or tax evasion. The 64 luxury watches alone could represent millions of dollars in additional assets, depending on the brands and models confiscated.

Heart, born Richard James Schueler, has long been a polarizing figure in the cryptocurrency world. He launched Hex in 2019 as a high-yield certificate of deposit on the Ethereum blockchain, promising investors annual percentage yields that critics derided as unsustainable. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission filed charges against Heart in 2024, alleging he raised over $1 billion through unregistered securities offerings for Hex and his later projects PulseChain and PulseX.

The SEC complaint accused Heart of misappropriating at least $12 million of investor funds to purchase luxury goods including sports cars, watches, and a 555-carat black diamond called 'The Enigma' that he bought for $4.3 million. Heart denied the allegations and left the United States, reportedly splitting time between Dubai and other jurisdictions with favorable extradition policies.

Turkish authorities have not yet publicly disclosed the specific charges against Heart or whether the arrest was made at the request of U.S. law enforcement through Interpol. Turkey and the United States maintain an extradition treaty, though the process can be lengthy and politically complex. If the arrest stems from an Interpol red notice, Heart could face extradition proceedings to answer the SEC's civil charges or any potential criminal indictments.

For Hex token holders, the arrest adds another layer of uncertainty to an already troubled project. HEX has lost over 95% of its value from its 2021 peak, and Heart's legal troubles have made it difficult for the token to gain listings on major exchanges. The project's smart contracts continue to operate autonomously on the blockchain, but the founder's detention could further erode whatever confidence remains among the community.

The timing of the arrest is notable as it comes amid growing international cooperation on cryptocurrency enforcement. Dubai, once considered a safe haven for crypto entrepreneurs fleeing Western regulators, has begun signing information-sharing agreements with U.S. and European authorities. Heart's choice of Istanbul as a base may have reflected a calculation that Turkish jurisdiction offered more protection, a bet that appears to have failed.

Investors holding HEX, PulseChain, or PulseX tokens face a difficult decision. While decentralized protocols can technically function without their founders, projects typically require ongoing development, marketing, and community leadership to maintain value. With Heart in custody and facing potential extradition, the future development of his blockchain ecosystem looks increasingly uncertain. Legal experts suggest holders monitor Turkish court filings and U.S. Department of Justice announcements for clarity on whether criminal charges will follow the existing civil case.
