Arbitrum Joins Paxos Stablecoin Alliance to Earn Share of Reserve Income

The Ethereum layer-2 network is backing Paxos-issued USDG to capture a portion of reserve yields, as new stablecoin alliances compete for distribution and economics.

Arbitrum has joined Global Dollar, a Paxos-led stablecoin consortium that shares reserve income with participating blockchain networks, marking a strategic shift in how layer-2 platforms monetize stablecoin activity on their chains.

The partnership gives Arbitrum a stake in the economics of USDG, a dollar-pegged stablecoin issued by regulated custodian Paxos. Unlike traditional stablecoins where issuers keep all interest earned on reserves, Global Dollar distributes a portion of that yield to networks that promote adoption and provide liquidity for the token.

Stablecoin reserves, typically held in short-term U.S. Treasuries and similar instruments, generate substantial returns in today's interest rate environment. Tether's USDT and Circle's USDC have generated billions in profit for their issuers from reserve yields alone, while the blockchains hosting trillions in stablecoin transfers received nothing.

The Global Dollar model attempts to realign those incentives. By offering networks a revenue share, Paxos aims to secure deeper integration, native support, and promotional efforts from layer-1 and layer-2 platforms that have historically served as unpaid infrastructure for other companies' stablecoins.

Arbitrum processes billions of dollars in stablecoin volume monthly, primarily USDT and USDC. The addition of USDG gives the network an economic stake in stablecoin growth for the first time, potentially funding ecosystem grants, validator rewards, or protocol development without diluting the native ARB token.

The move comes as stablecoin competition intensifies. Coinbase-backed USDC recently signed a five-year distribution deal with Binance, while new entrants like Open USD are launching partner-owned models. Each alliance is racing to lock in distribution channels and capture market share in what has become a $200 billion industry.

For Arbitrum users, the partnership could mean tighter USDG liquidity, lower trading fees for the token, and potential incentives for holding or transacting in USDG rather than competing stablecoins. Whether that is enough to challenge the entrenched dominance of USDT and USDC remains an open question, as network effects and existing liquidity still favor the incumbents.
