XRP Ledger Patches Decade-Old Bug That Could Create Billions in Phantom XRP

Researchers uncovered a critical vulnerability allowing attackers to generate spendable XRP without funding transactions, prompting an emergency software release after the flaw lay dormant for ten years.

The XRP Ledger development team has patched a critical vulnerability that remained undetected for over a decade, one that could have allowed malicious actors to create billions of dollars worth of XRP tokens from nothing. Security researchers demonstrated how an attacker could exploit the flaw to generate spendable XRP without the sender actually funding the payment, fundamentally breaking the ledger's supply integrity.

The bug resided in the payment processing logic of the XRP Ledger's core protocol. Under normal circumstances, when a user sends XRP, the ledger deducts the amount from the sender's balance and credits it to the recipient. The vulnerability allowed a carefully crafted transaction to bypass the deduction step while still crediting the recipient, effectively conjuring new XRP into existence that could then be traded, transferred, or sold on exchanges.

Researchers who discovered the flaw reported it privately to Ripple Labs and the XRP Ledger Foundation, triggering an emergency coordinated disclosure process. The development team released a patched version of the ledger software and urged all validators and node operators to upgrade immediately. Because the XRP Ledger relies on a consensus mechanism involving validator nodes, the patch needed rapid adoption across the network to prevent exploitation.

The potential impact was staggering. With XRP trading around $0.50 and a circulating supply of roughly 53 billion tokens, even a modest exploit creating a few billion tokens could have crashed the price and destroyed confidence in the asset. The bug's decade-long existence raises questions about code review practices in cryptocurrency projects that manage tens of billions of dollars in value, especially those that launched before modern security auditing became standard.

For XRP holders, the immediate risk has passed now that the patch is deployed and widely adopted by validators. However, the incident underscores the hidden fragility of blockchain systems. Unlike traditional financial infrastructure where bugs can often be rolled back or transactions reversed, a successful exploit on a decentralized ledger can be irreversible if attackers move stolen or fabricated tokens quickly enough through mixing services or decentralized exchanges.

The XRP Ledger development team has not disclosed whether any attacker actually discovered and used the vulnerability before the patch, though on-chain analysis firms are now combing through historical transaction data for anomalies. The researchers who found the bug are expected to publish a detailed technical writeup once sufficient time has passed for all nodes to upgrade, allowing the broader security community to learn from the flaw and audit similar codebases for comparable issues.
