Standard Chartered Becomes First Bank to Distribute Hong Kong Dollar Stablecoin

The London-based multinational with $850 billion in assets will distribute Anchorpoint's HKDAP to eligible clients, marking a major milestone in traditional banking's embrace of digital currencies.

Standard Chartered has become the first traditional banking institution to distribute a Hong Kong dollar-pegged stablecoin, announcing a partnership with Anchorpoint to offer HKDAP to select clients and partners. The move represents a watershed moment in the convergence of traditional finance and digital assets, with one of the world's largest banks now actively distributing a cryptocurrency product.

The London-headquartered bank, which manages approximately $850 billion in assets and has deep roots in Asian markets, will make Anchorpoint's HKDAP available to eligible institutional and corporate clients. The stablecoin is pegged 1:1 to the Hong Kong dollar, providing a digital alternative to traditional fiat currency transfers while maintaining price stability.

This partnership arrives as Hong Kong intensifies its push to become a global digital asset hub. The city's regulators have taken a notably progressive stance compared to mainland China, establishing clear frameworks for stablecoin issuance and encouraging traditional financial institutions to explore blockchain-based products. Standard Chartered's move validates this regulatory approach and could encourage other major banks to follow suit.

For businesses operating across Asia, a bank-distributed HKD stablecoin offers several advantages over both traditional banking rails and existing cryptocurrency infrastructure. Cross-border payments can settle faster and more cheaply than conventional wire transfers, while the involvement of a regulated multinational bank addresses concerns about counterparty risk that have plagued purely crypto-native stablecoin issuers.

The decision also reflects Standard Chartered's broader digital asset strategy. The bank has been among the most crypto-forward of the traditional financial giants, previously working on tokenization projects, exploring custody services, and researching central bank digital currencies. By distributing HKDAP, the bank positions itself to capture transaction fees and deepen client relationships in the emerging on-chain economy.

Industry observers note that Standard Chartered's brand and regulatory standing could accelerate institutional adoption of stablecoins in Asia. Many corporations have been hesitant to use stablecoins due to concerns about regulatory compliance and the reputation of purely crypto-focused issuers. A distribution partnership with a century-old bank that operates under stringent UK and Hong Kong oversight changes that calculation significantly.

The announcement comes amid growing competition in the Asia-Pacific stablecoin market. While Tether's USDT and Circle's USDC dominate globally, regional players are increasingly launching local-currency stablecoins to serve intra-Asian trade. Standard Chartered's involvement suggests that these regional stablecoins may gain traction faster than previously anticipated, particularly if other major banks begin offering similar distribution services.
