Pudgy Penguins' Abstract Becomes Second Ethereum Layer 2 to Shut in a Week

The consumer-focused blockchain will close December 15 after Igloo spent tens of millions supporting it, days after Blast announced its own network closure.

Abstract, the Ethereum layer-2 network backed by popular NFT brand Pudgy Penguins, announced it will permanently shut down on December 15, 2026, becoming the second major scaling solution to close operations within a single week. The closure comes despite parent company Igloo Inc. pouring tens of millions of dollars into supporting the network's development and operations.

The shutdown follows a similar announcement from Blast, another prominent Ethereum layer 2, which declared its network no longer economically viable just days earlier. The back-to-back closures mark a sobering turn for the Ethereum scaling ecosystem, which has seen dozens of competing networks launch in recent years as transaction fees on the main chain drove users toward cheaper alternatives.

Abstract positioned itself as a consumer-focused blockchain designed to onboard mainstream users through the cultural cache of Pudgy Penguins, one of the most recognizable NFT collections. The project raised significant venture capital and benefited from the brand recognition of its cartoon penguin mascots, which have expanded into physical toys sold at major retailers like Walmart and Target.

Despite the brand strength and financial backing, Abstract struggled to attract meaningful user activity and developer traction in an increasingly crowded field. Ethereum now hosts more than 50 active layer-2 networks, many offering near-identical technical features. The competition has fragmented liquidity and users across chains, making it difficult for newer entrants to achieve the network effects necessary for sustainability.

Igloo Inc. has not disclosed the total amount spent supporting Abstract, but industry sources familiar with layer-2 operations estimate that maintaining a functional network with security audits, infrastructure, and user incentives typically costs between $20 million and $50 million annually. The company will need to coordinate with users to migrate assets off the chain before the December deadline.

The closures of Abstract and Blast signal a consolidation phase in the Ethereum scaling market, where only networks with sufficient transaction volume, unique technical advantages, or deep institutional backing are likely to survive long-term. Established players like Arbitrum, Optimism, and Base continue to dominate usage metrics, leaving little room for newer competitors without a clear differentiation strategy.

For users holding assets on Abstract, the December 15 deadline creates an urgent need to bridge funds back to Ethereum mainnet or another active network. Failure to withdraw before the shutdown could result in assets becoming stranded, though Igloo has indicated it will provide tools and support for the migration process. The company has not announced whether it will pursue blockchain initiatives under a different model or focus exclusively on its consumer brand business.
