JPMorgan Expands JPM Coin to Ethereum for Institutional Payments

The largest U.S. bank is bringing its dollar deposit token to Ethereum, opening institutional payment rails to the public blockchain and expanding beyond its private network.

JPMorgan Chase is expanding JPM Coin, its dollar deposit token, to the Ethereum blockchain as it seeks to serve a broader range of institutional clients, according to a Bloomberg report. The move marks a significant shift for the bank's digital currency, which has until now operated exclusively on its private Onyx network.

JPM Coin represents dollar deposits held at the bank and allows institutional clients to make instant payments and settle transactions around the clock. Since its launch in 2019, the token has processed over $1 trillion in transactions, but only among clients connected to JPMorgan's permissioned network. By moving to Ethereum, the bank opens the door to clients who use other custodians and platforms.

The expansion reflects growing demand from institutions that want to settle tokenized securities and cross-border payments on public blockchains. JPMorgan has been a pioneer in blockchain adoption among traditional banks, but its private network limited interoperability with the broader digital asset ecosystem. Ethereum integration removes that friction.

For everyday investors, the development signals that major banks are no longer treating public blockchains as experimental. JPMorgan's decision validates Ethereum as infrastructure capable of handling institutional-grade finance. It also introduces competition for existing stablecoins like USDC and USDT, though JPM Coin remains available only to institutional clients, not retail users.

The move comes as banks worldwide race to integrate stablecoin and tokenized deposit systems. Mastercard recently launched stablecoin banking integration, while Kraken's parent company acquired an EU bank to offer deposits and lending. Deutsche Bank is preparing to launch crypto custody services in Germany with plans to expand to Asia in 2027.

JPMorgan has not disclosed a timeline for the Ethereum rollout or which tokenized assets it plans to support. The bank's Onyx unit will manage the technical integration, and clients will still need to maintain deposit accounts with JPMorgan to hold JPM Coin. The token is not a stablecoin in the regulatory sense, as it represents a claim on deposits rather than a standalone asset backed by reserves.

Watch whether other major banks follow JPMorgan onto Ethereum, and whether regulators treat bank deposit tokens differently from stablecoins issued by crypto-native firms. The distinction could determine whether JPM Coin faces the same scrutiny as Circle's USDC or Tether's USDT, especially if it begins to settle large volumes of cross-border payments.
