Crypto Card Spending Tops $1 Billion as Stablecoins Drive Everyday Purchases

Tracked card volume more than tripled in a year, with USDC and USDT funding over 70% of spending as users increasingly paid for groceries, rides and subscriptions.

Cryptocurrency has crossed a major adoption threshold, with tracked crypto card spending surpassing $1 billion as stablecoins transition from trading instruments to everyday payment rails. Data shows that card volume more than tripled year-over-year, with USD Coin (USDC) and Tether (USDT) accounting for over 70% of all transactions.

The shift marks a fundamental change in how cryptocurrency is being used. Rather than speculative trading or cross-border remittances, users are increasingly loading stablecoin-backed cards to pay for mundane expenses like groceries, ride-sharing services, streaming subscriptions, and utility bills. This spending pattern suggests cryptocurrency infrastructure is maturing into genuine payment networks.

The dominance of stablecoins in this spending is particularly noteworthy. USDC and USDT offer the utility of blockchain-based transactions without the volatility that has historically limited Bitcoin and Ethereum as payment methods. For merchants and cardholders alike, a dollar-pegged token provides predictability while maintaining the speed and borderless nature of crypto rails.

Several factors are driving this adoption curve. Crypto-native businesses and freelancers who earn in digital assets find it simpler to spend directly from their holdings rather than converting to fiat. Additionally, users in countries with currency controls or banking restrictions can access global commerce through stablecoin cards that bypass traditional financial gatekeepers.

Major card programs from companies like Coinbase, Crypto.com, and Binance have expanded their offerings, reducing fees and adding cashback rewards in cryptocurrency. These incentives, combined with improving user experience and wider merchant acceptance through existing Visa and Mastercard networks, have lowered the barriers to everyday crypto spending.

The $1 billion milestone, while significant, still represents a fraction of traditional card spending. However, the tripling of volume in just one year indicates exponential growth potential. If current trends continue, stablecoin-funded card spending could reach tens of billions within the next few years, potentially rivaling regional payment networks.

Regulatory clarity around stablecoins will be crucial for sustained growth. Recent moves by US and European regulators to establish frameworks for stablecoin issuers could either accelerate adoption through legitimacy or constrain it through compliance burdens. The industry is watching closely as these rules take shape, knowing they will determine whether this billion-dollar milestone is just the beginning or a temporary peak.
