Circle Acquires Cross-Border Payment Firm Tazapay for $400 Million to Expand USDC Reach

The USDC stablecoin issuer is buying a regulated payment infrastructure company that processes $25 billion annually across 100+ markets, bridging the gap between digital dollars and local banking systems.

Circle, the issuer of the USD Coin (USDC) stablecoin, has agreed to acquire Singapore-based cross-border payments firm Tazapay for $400 million in a deal that could significantly expand the company's ability to convert stablecoins into local currencies worldwide. The acquisition represents one of the largest strategic moves by a major stablecoin issuer to build regulated infrastructure connecting digital assets to traditional banking rails.

Tazapay currently processes approximately $25 billion in annualized payment volume and operates regulated payout infrastructure across more than 100 markets globally. The company specializes in what industry insiders call 'last-mile' payment solutions—the complex process of converting international payments into local currencies and depositing them into recipients' bank accounts while navigating varying regulatory requirements in each jurisdiction.

For Circle, which has seen explosive growth in USDC adoption for international payments and remittances, the acquisition solves a critical infrastructure challenge. While stablecoins offer near-instant, low-cost cross-border transfers, users still face friction when converting those digital dollars into local fiat currencies for everyday spending. Tazapay's existing relationships with local banks, payment processors, and regulatory authorities across dozens of countries could eliminate much of that friction.

The deal comes as stablecoin payment volumes continue to surge globally. Circle reported that USDC transfer volumes exceeded $15 trillion in 2025, with a growing share coming from cross-border commerce, remittances, and business-to-business payments rather than crypto trading. Competitors including Visa have reported similar trends, with Visa's own stablecoin settlement volumes recently surpassing a $20 billion annualized run rate.

Tazapay's regulatory licenses and compliance infrastructure are particularly valuable as governments worldwide implement stricter oversight of stablecoin issuers and payment providers. Singapore recently proposed rules requiring 100% reserve backing for stablecoins and banning yield payments, while the European Union's Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) regulation has set similar standards. Having pre-established regulatory relationships in key markets could accelerate Circle's ability to offer compliant services globally.

The acquisition also positions Circle to compete more directly with traditional payment giants and emerging fintech companies in the cross-border payments market, which the World Bank estimates involves over $800 billion in annual flows. By combining USDC's blockchain-based settlement speed with Tazapay's local payout infrastructure, Circle can offer businesses an end-to-end solution that settles in minutes rather than days while potentially reducing costs compared to traditional correspondent banking networks.

The transaction is expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2026, subject to regulatory approvals in Singapore and other jurisdictions where Tazapay holds licenses. Circle has not disclosed whether the $400 million purchase price will be paid in cash, USDC, equity, or a combination, though the company raised $400 million in a funding round last year that valued it at $9 billion. Tazapay's existing management team is expected to remain in place and operate with significant autonomy within Circle's organizational structure.
